Agribusiness giant Archer Daniel Midland Company says that after 44 years in Decatur, Ill., it is looking for a new location for its headquarters.
CEO Patricia Woertz says in a news release Monday that ADM needs what she called a global center with better access to customers and other employees around the world.
The company said in the release that it wouldn't publicly discuss details about where it might relocate.
Meanwhile, Crain's Chicago Business is reporting that ADM is moving to Chicago.
And with luck, they also close up their plant on Peoria's riverfront.
Why would that be lucky for Peoria? Because the plant stinks. it stinks to Holy Hell.
Tell someone you're from Peoria, and they will mention three things:
1. Big Als.
2. Caterpillar.
3. That God-awful stench.
I've gotten off work at a job WAAAAAAAAAAY up on Pioneer Parkway, taken a deep breath, and almost retched from the distinctive odor of ADM. I've driven through South Peoria on days when environmental conditions were such that ADM had caused a think brown haze to lower visibility to about one block.
And you cannot tell me that stench has not caused prospective employers to get back on the plane and leave.
But you mention these problems to any civic leader and they'd just mutter something about jobs and tax revenue and try to move away from you.
What else would I expect? The stench problem is worse in the South Side, and who gives a fuck about anybody who lives there. If they mattered at all, they'd live up by Weaver Ridge.
