The state is about to make it even harder to get around if your handicapped

Press release:

NEW DISABLED PARKING LAW INFORMATION MEETING TO BE HELD ON DECEMBER 18, 2013

PEORIA, IL – Due to a new law enacted by the Illinois General Assembly, significant changes are coming to the Persons with Disabilities Parking Program.  The new law, effective January 1, 2014, will no longer allow a person with a disability parking placard/license plates to automatically qualify for free parking at meters in cities and municipalities.  A more stringent disability criteria has been established for individuals to qualify for free parking.

On Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at the Peoria Downtown Public Library, 107 N.E. Monroe, in the lower level auditorium from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for the Disabled (MACD) and the Secretary of State’s Office will hold an information meeting on the new law.  The Secretary of State’s Office will discuss the program changes and the application process.

Because of the law changes, Secretary of State Jesse White is now required to recertify all disability placard/plate holders in Illinois by the end of 2013 and issue new placards which will be valid until 2018.

Agencies providing services to the disabled and individuals planning to obtain or currently possessing a disabled parking placard/license plates should plan to attend.

If you have questions about the workshop, please contact Teri Miller, Chair MACD at 309/497-2069 or David Watkins, City of Peoria Equal Opportunity Manager at 309/494-8530.
